Hakone Open-Air Museum, 1972-1973

Sometime near the end of 1971, after a very successful solo-exhibit in New York, I invited my son and husband to go on a trip around the world. Description of that adventure is at page 14 of the Part One of my book "The Work of Carla Lavatelli by Carla Lavatelli 1970-1984".

We stopped in Tokyo for several days where I had made an appointment with the executive director of the museum, Mr. Shigeru Mitsumura.

When we returned to New York and Italy, there was an exchange of letters to inform me that they had plans to show my work for three months. My solo exhibit was scheduled to inaugurate on December 1st, 1972 and remain on view until the end of February 1973.

The generosity of my California dealer Frank Heller, allowed for this exhibition to take place, as he paid for the crating, shipping and insurance of the sculptures to the Hakone Museum in Japan, and their return to California.

The Italian Ambassador in Tokyo, H.E. Giusti del Giardino was graciously doing the honors for my opening, as I was not present. I still remember his very gracious letter to me.

Letters concerning this event are enclosed within my book "The Work of Carla Lavatelli by Carla Lavatelli 1970-1984".
